“…Kaleidoscopic display of musical modes and moods”
Pierre-Laurent Aimard received a wonderful review in International Piano Magazine for his latest recording Beethoven: Hammerklavier Sonata & Eroica Variations.
Nobody approaches the Hammerklavier without much thought and extensive limbering up, and this recording was postponed many times. It was finally made possible, says Aimard, ‘thanks to the inspiring turmoil and the fascinating recess that the “Corona crisis” engendered’. And he doesn’t underestimate the intellectual challenge of the work: ‘The Hammerklavier Sonata surpasses all understanding. Facing it is one of the most frightening tests of a performer’s life. But it is as irresistible as it is insurmountable. To dare to embody it can only be an attempt to wrest the unfathomable from sound matter.’
