Double Five Stars for ‘Schubert: Ländler’ in BBC Music Magazine

“Intimate charm: pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard enchants in Schubert’s miniatures.”

Schubert: Ländler, performed by Pierre-Laurent Aimard, received a fantastic double five star review in the August issue of BBC Music Magazine!

“Best known as a modernist with a special relish for some of the most challenging parts of the piano
repertoire, Pierre-Laurent Aimard presents an altogether different side of himself here. In contrast also to those monumental late sonatas of Schubert, the composer’s dance miniatures draw playing of confessional intimacy and charm. In his booklet note, Aimard aptly describes this programme as
‘perhaps more of a sleepwalker’s journey than a series of dances,’ and suggests that ‘in these pieces of singular brevity, Schubert manages to plunge us into the heart of the sweetness, ambiguity and vertigo of the realm between life and death.”
